BDW Endorses Bill Wagner For SBC President

Yea, right. But he does seem to be an improvement over his opponent - Frank Cox - who embodies what it means to be a Georgia Baptist Fundamentalist.

A few observations concerning Bill Wagner & his campaign to be the next President of the SBC.

1. Dude has his own campaign website (is that a first in Baptist Life?)

2. The website is NICE.

3. At the top of his resume, Wagner notes that his "health is excellent." Is that a slap in the face to former Presidential candidate Dr. Albert Mohler? Or perhaps Wagner is just conceding that he's John McCain old but yet healthy as a horse?

4. The fella wants to improve the image of the SBC. God knows they need it.

5. Wants to appoint more minorities to SBC boards. Amen. When your highest ranking African-American employee in Nashville is the head janitor - ya need a little diversity!

6. Wants to rebuild relationships with Baptist Conventions and leaders from around the world. This implies that those relationships were broken when SBC severed ties with the Baptist World Alliance. At least Wagner understands that Baptist isolationism is the Fundamentalist Way.

7. He has a blog.

8. Identifies "Homosexuals" as one of the six-fastest growing "World Movements." After pulling my chin off my keyboard, I remembered that this guy is indeed a Southern Baptist!

Brother BDW,

Am I reading this post wrong? Are you entering the fray of SBC politics again. You are now endorsing Dr. Wagner?

What is going on here?

BDW,

So with your 'endorsement' and 'that' of Rev. Burleson, it would appear that Bill Wagner has the moderate and irenic endorsements! Hooray.

Tim,

Tongue-In-Cheek.

Nimoninsky,

I don't know who you are but I don't appreciate your foul language in my comment thread. Further, I think you have the impression that I participate over at Baylorfans. Like many people, I occasionally read Baylorfans. But I'm not a member nor have I ever left a post at Baylorfans. I'm not whoever you think I am.

I wondered if you were attending the sbc to vote for him.

You endorsed Obama and I would imagine you are voting for him.

I think it's a little odd that Wagner's campaign site would point people to an "endorsement" that opens with the words "Yeah, right."

After years of the sort of false modesty exhibited by many "candidates" for the SBC presidency, this is refreshing. Here's someone who wants the job, and instead of the "Aw, well, shucks, guys, I mean, if you really think I should run..." hogwash, he puts up a website and gives us good reasons to give him the job.

Across the blogosphere, the reaction of known supporters of the conservative resurgence tells me two things. 1. After two successive elections of a non-resurgence-aligned president, there is a real fear that there is a likely chance there will be a third. 2. They are bothered by the fact that they can't control the amount of press, or cyberattention, this particular candidate will get, and that Southern Baptists who think for themselves, or who are not happy with the direction the resurgence has gone in the past five or six years will be more than half of the messengers in attendance.

I certainly hope so.

So, you left leaners want us to go the way of the Episcopalian's? Have you talked to God about how He feels about it?
I am so thankful for a decision over 30 years ago for our denomination to hold to the Word of God instead of following the culture. Mom2

The problem with the SBC, and in my case the CSBC, is that it is totally irrelevant to local church life. As a local pastor, the only thing the SBC provides is a standard of scriptural and doctrinal integrity with which we can align ourselves. Dr. Wagner seeks to change the inertness of the SBC to local church life. His life's ministry emphasis stands on two pillars: Evangelism and Church Growth. He is a refreshing leap out of the box of traditional Baptist thought on how to reach out to the lost and enrich the church. God is in the business of making radical changes, for He is not bound by our traditions - which often become idols - and when He moves it usually rocks our boat. I think its high time for a good boat rocking.

Mom2-
Did you do any research before writing your comment? Dr. Bill Wagner is a career missionary with the SBC and professor at an SBC seminary. This is not exactly the resume of a liberal or even a moderate.

I know him and he is a good and decent man who happens to have a plan for the SBC rather than continuing the resurgence's status quo. It is about time the SBC started looking forward instead of back. The battle is already won. Time to get back into the real fight.
