The Blame Game Begins

From today's Washington Times...

The Rev. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberties Commission, said, "Republicans would have been better off with Mr. Bush heading the ticket, as if it were a presidential year, because Southern Baptists and evangelicals don't feel the same frustration toward Mr. Bush as they feel toward Republicans in Congress. They have much more affection for him than for Republicans in the House and the Senate."

Let me be as polite as possible. This man is a proven MORON. Southern Baptists, how much do you pay this guy to say such foolish things? Six figures I bet. Land has his head so far up Bush's Butt that he can't see the Forest for the Trees....

Land just makes me roll my eyes.

He's lost touch.

Enjoyed the Olsen interview. He's a member of my church here in Waco. I hope to read his book over Christmas break.

Land is a lobbyist in the truest sense of the word. Today, however, he is probably the only person who isn't acknowledging that this vote was a referendum on the Bush presidency. Whether you like Bush or not, reality is what it is.

Wasn't it just a few weeks ago that Land announced that some extremely high figure of Southern Baptists still supported Bush? Like, in the 80% range or something? I have no doubt that it probably runs higher than in most other constituencies at this point, but I would think 55% might be a high figure. I attend a politically and theologically conservative church that would be a bit to the right of the middle of the conservative half, and I wouldn't guess support for Bush in our congregation would run much over half. There are a lot of conservative evangelicals who are quite upset over his lack of accomplishment in the religious right social agenda field.

Land must still be holding out for some kind of position in the Bush administration. There are always a few people around who are willing to board a sinking ship and ride for as long as it lasts.

I think you have a mixed metaphor here. Perhaps, "he has his head so far up Bush's butt that he can smell his mouthwash..."?

Otherwise, you sound right on.

Blogger is screwy today.

Land's love for Bush has blinded him from the bigger picture. Obviously more evangelicals voted for Democrats this past Tuesday.

Those on the left and right are fed up with the Iraq War - but Land has yet to realize that....

Big Daddy,

That's cool about Olson being a member of your Church. Some of the readers of my interview with him will be surprised he even goes to Church! For me, that is sad...

I've read the book twice now. I think his greatest contribution may be his expertise as a theological historian. He introduced theologians frankly I'd never heard of, all of course in the Arniniam tradition. For my part, evangelical Calvinists will need to do more than ignore Olson's work. I think they'll have to answer it.

Have a great weekend. With that, I am...

"As polite as possible?" LOL! Land annoys me, too. Have you ever met him? Back when you worked for BJC, perhaps? I met him several times when I was a grad student and then a few times when I worked for Every Church a Peace Church (debates, etc.). He is a real jerk.

Land is like so many overwhelmed and blinded by the glow of power. its that feeding frenzy, lock step, bath water drinking, lockstep walking element of the sbc that will not change...he probably sits biting his finger nails until the conference call from bush comes in so he can "exhale"...the good people of the pew sitting sbc that knows no better deserves better than what his leadership has given them.
