I have fond memories of Berkeley and the Bay Area. I spent a semester in the law school at Cal, and, while becoming increasingly convinced that I didn't really want to be a lawyer, fell in absolute love with the climate and the city. Berkeley is quite a place, unlike any other place I've ever been, and while it is identified as a bastion of liberalism, and the symbol of the whole "Left Coast" culture, I loved it because there's virtually no way to "not fit in" and it was, in 1980, one of the safest places in the country to live.
